Client Portal Still Requires Authentication with "Only allow authenticated users to view the Client Portal" Turned Off

Issue

  • Even though I have the "Only allow authenticated users to view the Client Portal" un-checked, the Client Portal still requires users to sign in to to access the Portal.

Environment

  • Administrative access to the Client Portal through either:
    • Global TDAdmin access OR
    • Application Administrator access
  • An active client portal

Resolution

You can use either of the following options (or both) to allow the client portal to be public without first requiring authentication:

  1. Add content to the home page and turn it on
    1. Navigate to TDAdmin > Applications > [Client Portal] > Modules & Pages > Pages
    2. Click the Home page
    3. On the Content tab, add any content (I often use the Client Portal Search), and click Save
    4. On the Details tab, click the Activate button

  2. Make one or more sections visible by default
    1. Navigate to TDAdmin > Applications > [Client Portal] > Settings
    2. Scroll down to the Public Client Portal Sections section
    3. Check the Visible or Auto button for a section (I suggest Knowledge Base and/or Services)
Note: If you choose Auto, at least one article or service must be visible to the Public, see related articles for details

Cause

If the a Client Portal page is not turned on in the client portal, and if the default public client portal sections are all set to Not Visible, then the portal does not have any content to display to somebody who isn't authenticated, so it will require authentication to show the remaining content.  These are the default settings when first configuring a new portal, to minimize the chance of exposing an unfinished portal before it is ready to be accessed.
