This introduction article will help users to configure weighting calculations using the TDAdmin interface in Portfolio Planning. The user must have access to TDAdmin to configure weighting.
Overview
Project Portfolios provide a way to bundle several projects together for analysis purposes.
A portfolio will display the overall percent complete of all the included projects based on a weighting method set globally by an administrator.
Where to Find This
This feature appears in the TDAdmin interface at the following path:
- TDAdmin > Portfolio Planning > Portfolio and Program Weighting
Using Weighting
Understanding Percent Complete
To understand the percent complete values, picture this calculation:
Portfolio % Comp = The SUM of ( (Project Weight) * (Project Percent Complete) ) for all projects within the portfolio
Project weight is determined based upon the global weighting field set by an administrator. This setting applies to all portfolios for your organization.
There are three choices for how project weight is calculated:
- None – There is no weighting at all, which means Project Weight equals 1.
- Estimated Hours – Weighting is based off the estimated hours of a project. This means Project Weight = (Project Estimated Hours) / (the SUM of project estimated hours for all projects within the portfolio).
- Budget – Weighting is based off of project budgets. This means Project Weight = (Project Budget) / (the SUM of project budget for all projects within the portfolio).
Setting Project Weight
To set the global weighting for all portfolios the administrator should:
- Navigate to TDAdmin > Portfolio Planning > Portfolio and Program Weighting
- Click the Portfolios and Programs Weighting Field, and select None, Estimated Hours, or Budget.
- Click Save.
Now, in Analysis, when you access your Portfolios or Programs you’ll see their overall project percent complete values are calculated based on this setting. The overall projects percent complete value is updated nightly.
