Reporting Time Off: Project vs. Workspace

During our initial TDX PPM implementation a couple years ago, we decided to create a Leave workspace with all relevant Time Off Time Types for as members to utilize as needed for their Time Entry (as members). Although we can't recall why we opted for a Workspace instead of a Project, we're concerned that the upcoming Workspace changes in the 11.5 release may break that functionality. Regardless, are there any specific pros or cons to utilizing a Project for reporting leave instead? (In case it's relevant, we don't utilize the Time Off Calendar.)

Hello Shane,
The primary benefit is that projects have specified start and end dates whereas Workspaces are *meant* to represent ongoing types of work that will never really have an end (like leave tracking, because that will always be a "thing" that is needed).

Also, projects can eventually build up a large number of resources on it if you keep every employee you have ever had as a resource, which will make the system struggle to load the Resources page eventually.

Overall the Workspace *is* the better option, though if you have specific fears on how the new workspaces will affect that potentially just let me know.

Sincerely,

Thanks for this info, Mark. Although I was unable to attend the recent “Using TD Workspaces” session at Converge, my colleague’s interpretation & notes indicated that we might not be able to continue using a Workspace for our leave time, primarily per it becoming a separate application from Projects.

It sounds like that may not be the case; I’m sure we’ll learn more in this week’s preview webinar.
