Should Plan %Complete match % of Tasks Complete on Project Update Status page?

I am wondering ig the Plan %Complete should match % of Tasks Complete on Project Update Status page because ours do not.

Are these two figures supposed to be different? If yes, can you please help me understand how it works?

Thanls,

Billie Herman

Hi Billie,

Estimated hours for tasks must be set manually. The system does not try to make any guesses about estimated hours for tasks unless the tasks are being imported from another plan that had estimated hours specified for tasks or the task is being created from a ticket that had estimated hours specified.

You can remove estimated hours by checking out the plan and clearing the "Estimated Hours" entries for each of the tasks with estimated hours specified.

I hope this helps!

Hi Drake, hope we can pick up where we left off.  Here is a screenshot of a Plan of mine showing that although we do not track hours, estimated hours display for some tasks.  I am wondering why.  Thanks.

Hi Billie,

I'm sorry, but I do not see the screen shot on this question. Did you upload it here?

Also, the % of tasks complete is different from the plan's % complete. The first is simply dividing the number of completed tasks by the total number of tasks. The second is dividing the total number of completed hours (sum of estimated hours * % complete across all tasks) by the total number of estimated hours on the plan. The first gives you an idea of how many tasks are complete while the second gives you an idea of how much work is complete.

I hope this helps!

Sorry I did not make myself clear.  Its not the %Complete field on the Status Page where I can enter the %Complete, its the calculated field in the right frame that is the issue.

For instance on the project that I supplied a screenshot, the numbers for Total Tasks and Completed Tasks are different so they result in 2 different %Complete percentages for one project with one plan.

Plan

145 Completed Tasks/184 Total Tasks = 79% Complete

Update Status Page right frame (same project)

45 Completed Tasks/136 Total Tasks = 33% Complete

Hope this states the issue a little clearer.

Hi Billie,

These numbers will very often be different as the Project's % complete is always set manually by the Project Manager while the % complete of the plan/tasks will be automatically rolled up.

The % complete of the plan is just an indicator for how much planned work has been complete, but we still provide the freedom for Project managers to set their own % complete based on the information available to them.

I hope this makes sense!
